Grodan Rockwool

Rockwool is volcanic rock that has been superheated to a molten state, then spun into fibers. The fibers are then compressed into cubes or slabs, or shredded into a granulated form. Rockwool offers an excellent balance of air and water for your plants' roots.

Miscellaneous Rockwool Supplies

Europonic Rockwool Conditioning Solution is a pre-conditioner that adjusts and stabilizes rockwool for maximum nutrient uptake. The blend of pH controls, vitamins, and minerals creates an ideal initial environment for propagation or preparing rockwool for transplants. Mixing Instructions: Add 3 ounces of rockwool conditioning solution to one gallon of water and mix thoroughly. Saturate rockwool and let soak overnight.

  • Europonic Rockwool Conditioning Solution, quart, $12.99
  • Europonic Rockwool Conditioning Solution, gallon, $29.99

Sunleaves Rockwool Cube Covers fit on top of 4" rockwool blocks, or can be cut to fit 3" blocks. They prevent light from reaching the surface of the cube to reduce messy algae growth.

  • Sunleaves Rockwool Cube Covers, pack of 40, $5.00

Hydrofarm Rockwool Cube Covers fit on top of 6" Hugo rockwool blocks. They prevent light from reaching the surface of the cube to reduce messy algae growth.

  • Hydrofarm Rockwool Cube Covers, pack of 40, $13.95

Hydroton Grow Rocks

Hydroton grow rocks are made of clay that is heated in a furnace until it expands and fills with air. Grow rocks are lightweight, porous, and reusable. Since they are made just for horticultural use, they require no pretreatment and will not react with nutrient solutions.

  • Hydroton Grow Rocks 10 Liter (2.5 gallon), $9.99
  • Hydroton Grow Rocks 25 Liter (6 gallon), $23.99
  • Hydroton Grow Rocks 50 Liter (12.5 gallon), $39.99

Dyna-Rok Silica Stone

This material is a sedimentary rock consisting of the fossilized remains of unicellular fresh water plants known as diatoms. It consists of approximately 90% amorphous silicate with the balance made up of other mineral elements needed for plant growth. Dyna-Rok is lightweight, absorbent and 100% natural.

  • Dyna-Rok Silica Stone (Medium Grade) 40 liter (10 gallon), $43.99

Perlite

Perlite is puffed sand and can be used as a hydroponic medium for small, lightweight crops such as lettuce. Perlite is often added to a soil mix to improve drainage and aeration.

  • Perlite 0.75 cubic ft (5 gallons), $5.99
  • Perlite 3.0 cubic ft (20 gallons), $15.99
  • Perlite 6.0 cubic ft (40 gallons), $25.99   IN-STORE ONLY

Fox Farm Chunky Perlite

This large-grain horticultural perlite is a favorite of orchid growers and can be added to a soil blend for maximum aeration. Chunky perlite also works great as a stand-alone hydroponic medium or blended with coconut fiber.

  • Chunky Perlite 2.0 cubic ft (13 gallons), $17.99
  • Chunky Perlite 4.0 cubic ft (26 gallons), $32.99   IN-STORE ONLY

Vermiculite

Vermiculite is puffed mica. Each piece can hold many times its own weight in water, so this medium is often used to increase moisture retention in a soil mix. Vermiculite can be used as a medium for cuttings, but is not usually used by itself as a hydroponic medium.

  • Vermiculite 0.75 cubic ft (5 gallons), $7.99
  • Vermiculite 3.0 cubic ft (20 gallons), $21.99
  • Vermiculite 6.0 cubic ft (40 gallons), $37.99   IN-STORE ONLY

Coconut Fiber

Coconut fiber is a fairly new growth medium, but its popularity is growing quickly because of its impressive results and versatility. The fiber holds lots of moisture while also permitting excellent aeration and drainage. The coconut's natural rooting hormones promote excellent root development—a wonderful medium for cuttings! Coconut fiber can be used by itself, or blended with some combination of soil, perlite and/or vermiculite. In hydroponic systems, the fiber is usually blended with grow rocks. Coconut fiber shares similar properties with peat moss, but the coconut fiber (a by-product of coconut processing) is a totally renewable resource! Sold as a compressed brick or larger block—soak in water to expand compressed coconut into loose fiber medium. Individual bricks make about 2 gallons of medium, while the larger block makes 18-21 gallons.

  • Coconut Fiber 1 brick, $2.49
  • Coconut Fiber Case of 24 bricks, $49.99
  • Botanicare Large Block, $11.99
  • Atami B'Cuzz Loose Coconut Fiber, 40 liters, $29.99
  • Cocotek Grow Mat 4'x4'x1" , $50.00
  • Cocotek Grow Mat 4'x8'x1/8", $32.00

Jiffy Pellets

Jiffy Peat Pellets expand when wet to form a contained ball of peat moss. Easy to use and excellent for starting seeds or cuttings.

  • Jiffy Pellets each, $0.18

Rapid Rooters

These amazing new products from General Hydroponics are plugs made from composted tree bark. Beneficial microorganisms occur naturally from the composting process, and they help give your new roots the boost they need for success. Rapid Rooters are wonderful for cuttings/clones as well as for seed propagation. Sold as a Starter Set of 50 plugs in a propagation tray with specially designed insert, or as a Refill Bag of 50 plugs. The Rapid Rooter Mat is 98 connected cubes sized to fit a standard propagation tray.

  • Rapid Rooter Starter Tray Set, $19.99
  • Rapid Rooter Refill Bag, $12.99
  • Rapid Rooter Mat, $18.99

Sunleaves Float and Grow System

Great for starting seeds or clones, the Sunleaves Float & Grow contains a reusable Styrofoam insert of 55 earth-friendly Super Starter Plugs. Because the Styrofoam base floats, it's difficult to overwater with the Sunleaves Float & Grow. Delicate roots stay above the water line, and, once seedlings are established, growers can simply plant individual plugs directly into soil or hydroponic medium. The Refill Bag contains 55 refill plugs.

  • Sunleaves Float and Grow System, $28.95
  • Sunleaves Float and Grow Refill Bag, $16.95

Oasis Cubes

Made from a special foam that promotes excellent air/water balance, Oasis Cubes are excellent for starting seeds or rooting cuttings. Since pH is already in the proper range, no pre-treating or conditioning is required when using Oasis Cubes. Oasis Cubes are either 1.5" x 1.5" or 1.5" x 1.25" and are sold by the half sheet, full sheet or case.

  • Oasis Cubes 1.5" x 1.25" half sheet (52 cubes), $3.99
