Grodan RockwoolRockwool is volcanic rock that has been superheated to a molten state, then spun into fibers. The fibers are then compressed into cubes or slabs, or shredded into a granulated form. Rockwool offers an excellent balance of air and water for your plants' roots. For more information on Grodan Rockwool and tons of great tips on hydroponic gardening, visit their web site, Hydroponics 101. Grodan Rockwool Starter CubesAvailable in three choices:
Grodan Rockwool Grow BlocksAre available in three choices:
Grodan Rockwool SlabsAvailable in the following sizes:
Grodan Rockwool Mini CubesThese little baby rockwool cubes are a great disposable alternative to grow rocks. Even when grow containers are filled with mini cubes, there is lots of air space between the individual cubes.
Grodan Granulated RockwoolAvailable in a water-absorbent or water-repellent variety.
Miscellaneous Rockwool SuppliesEuroponic Rockwool Conditioning Solution is a pre-conditioner that adjusts and stabilizes rockwool for maximum nutrient uptake. The blend of pH controls, vitamins, and minerals creates an ideal initial environment for propagation or preparing rockwool for transplants. Mixing Instructions: Add 3 ounces of rockwool conditioning solution to one gallon of water and mix thoroughly. Saturate rockwool and let soak overnight.
Sunleaves Rockwool Cube Covers fit on top of 4" rockwool blocks, or can be cut to fit 3" blocks. They prevent light from reaching the surface of the cube to reduce messy algae growth.
Hydrofarm Rockwool Cube Covers fit on top of 6" Hugo rockwool blocks. They prevent light from reaching the surface of the cube to reduce messy algae growth.
Hydroton Grow RocksHydroton grow rocks are made of clay that is heated in a furnace until it expands and fills with air. Grow rocks are lightweight, porous, and reusable. Since they are made just for horticultural use, they require no pretreatment and will not react with nutrient solutions.
Dyna-Rok Silica StoneThis material is a sedimentary rock consisting of the fossilized remains of unicellular fresh water plants known as diatoms. It consists of approximately 90% amorphous silicate with the balance made up of other mineral elements needed for plant growth. Dyna-Rok is lightweight, absorbent and 100% natural.
PerlitePerlite is puffed sand and can be used as a hydroponic medium for small, lightweight crops such as lettuce. Perlite is often added to a soil mix to improve drainage and aeration.
Fox Farm Chunky PerliteThis large-grain horticultural perlite is a favorite of orchid growers and can be added to a soil blend for maximum aeration. Chunky perlite also works great as a stand-alone hydroponic medium or blended with coconut fiber.
VermiculiteVermiculite is puffed mica. Each piece can hold many times its own weight in water, so this medium is often used to increase moisture retention in a soil mix. Vermiculite can be used as a medium for cuttings, but is not usually used by itself as a hydroponic medium.
Coconut FiberCoconut fiber is a fairly new growth medium, but its popularity is growing quickly because of its impressive results and versatility. The fiber holds lots of moisture while also permitting excellent aeration and drainage. The coconut's natural rooting hormones promote excellent root development—a wonderful medium for cuttings! Coconut fiber can be used by itself, or blended with some combination of soil, perlite and/or vermiculite. In hydroponic systems, the fiber is usually blended with grow rocks. Coconut fiber shares similar properties with peat moss, but the coconut fiber (a by-product of coconut processing) is a totally renewable resource! Sold as a compressed brick or larger block—soak in water to expand compressed coconut into loose fiber medium. Individual bricks make about 2 gallons of medium, while the larger block makes 18-21 gallons.
Jiffy PelletsJiffy Peat Pellets expand when wet to form a contained ball of peat moss. Easy to use and excellent for starting seeds or cuttings.
Rapid RootersThese amazing new products from General Hydroponics are plugs made from composted tree bark. Beneficial microorganisms occur naturally from the composting process, and they help give your new roots the boost they need for success. Rapid Rooters are wonderful for cuttings/clones as well as for seed propagation. Sold as a Starter Set of 50 plugs in a propagation tray with specially designed insert, or as a Refill Bag of 50 plugs. The Rapid Rooter Mat is 98 connected cubes sized to fit a standard propagation tray.
Sunleaves Float and Grow SystemGreat for starting seeds or clones, the Sunleaves Float & Grow contains a reusable Styrofoam insert of 55 earth-friendly Super Starter Plugs. Because the Styrofoam base floats, it's difficult to overwater with the Sunleaves Float & Grow. Delicate roots stay above the water line, and, once seedlings are established, growers can simply plant individual plugs directly into soil or hydroponic medium. The Refill Bag contains 55 refill plugs.
Oasis CubesMade from a special foam that promotes excellent air/water balance, Oasis Cubes are excellent for starting seeds or rooting cuttings. Since pH is already in the proper range, no pre-treating or conditioning is required when using Oasis Cubes. Oasis Cubes are either 1.5" x 1.5" or 1.5" x 1.25" and are sold by the half sheet, full sheet or case.
